Don’t Just Answer Questions—Ask Them: How to Take Control of Your Next Interview

If you're interviewing for a job in printing or packaging—whether it's operating a flexo press, managing a converting team, or maintaining production equipment—there’s something you might not be doing that could change the entire conversation:

Asking the right questions.

Too often, skilled tradespeople walk into interviews thinking they’re just there to be evaluated. But the most successful candidates treat the interview as a two-way conversation. You’re not just trying to get hired—you’re trying to make sure the job is right for you.

Here are five questions that not only help you learn more about the role—but also show hiring managers that you’re thoughtful, experienced, and ready to contribute.

1. “What’s the biggest challenge facing your team right now?”

This question tells you a lot. Are they short-staffed? Running older equipment? Starting a new shift? You’ll quickly get a sense of what you'd be walking into—and whether you’re up for it.

It also positions you as someone ready to solve problems, not just fill a seat.

2. “How would you describe the culture on the floor or in the pressroom?”

Every shop runs differently. Some are fast-paced and structured, others more relaxed and informal. This question helps you figure out if you'll click with the team and leadership style.

Culture fit is often what makes or breaks your long-term success in a role.

3. “What kind of support do new hires receive in the first few weeks?”

This isn’t just about training. It’s about knowing if they’ll help you succeed or expect you to figure it out on your own. Look for signs of structure: written SOPs, shadowing, safety walkthroughs, or mentorship.

A company that invests in onboarding is usually serious about retention.

4. “What are the goals for this position over the next 6–12 months?”

This helps you understand if the role is stable or evolving—and what success looks like from their point of view. It’s also a great setup for you to explain how your background aligns with their expectations.

5. “Can you tell me about the machines or production lines I’d be working on?”

Whether it's a W&H flexo press, a Comexi laminator, or a Weber SOS bag machine, you want to know what you're walking into. This question also opens the door to discuss your previous experience and your willingness to learn new systems—something employers really value.

Take it one step further: If you're seriously considering the job, ask if you can see the equipment on the floor firsthand—either during the interview or on a follow-up visit. A quick walk-through gives you a chance to:

  • See what shape the equipment is in

  • Observe how clean and organized the work area is

  • Get a feel for the pace, people, and workflow

  • Ask specific questions about setups, changeovers, or press maintenance

Why These Questions Matter

This industry is built on precision, timing, and teamwork. The same should apply to your job search.

Asking thoughtful, informed questions:

  • Helps you uncover key information about the role

  • Shows employers you’re invested in your future

  • Gives you the confidence to accept (or walk away from) the offer
